Loking at Sheldon's shimano page I would say no. Altus appeared as a renaming of the 300GS group which was still around in 1990. the reference to LX in the 70s is also a bit duff as that spun out of the deore group in the early 90s. dont recognise the mech but it dos'nt look too flash!

Not so fast Abernathy!

That's definitely a late seventies style derailleur - several Shimano models used that ribbed upper knuckle at the time.

I don't know whether "LX" in the eBay link is just a typo for "LT" or whether there was more than one Altus model available.

I agree that it's nothing special though. Not really worth the postage, unfortunately.

Here's another one!

http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0188859047

Seems there were at least two models in the early eighties: LT and ST

http://www.fa-technik.adfc.de/Herstelle ... pen80.html

and the Schwinn Voyageur came with the LT in '80 and '81:

Isn't the Internet wonderful?

I kinda like it, it's just a bit different. I have a Shimano 500 gearset

Which although isn't worth much I'd be sorry to see it go, that said I think it may make it onto a project bike soon...
