Lovely frame which looks too good to be 501 even 501sl. Great groupset too albeit I'm doubtful that any of it is C-Record but more likely complete Chorus (an equally stunning group). Still overpriced imho but nice.

Couple of things letting it down, namely though he fitted the gear levers round the wrong way :D

Tel.......do you think that's the original paint?

Off white is an unusual colour (Feather aside) and that drilled rear dropout. Jackson / Woodrup ?

Going to put it on my watch list

There's a lot of references to C-Record, but none actually installed on the bike. The headset, calipers, seat post are Chorus. I'm not sure about the derailleurs and chainset. They look like Athena, but early Chorus might have looked similar. I doubt very much that the seller has stripped out the BB to check it's C-Record, so it's a bit silly stating this.

But as bikes go, it looks very nice and well proportioned. I'd never heard of 501 SL - it almost seems pointless when you can get 531P, 653 or 753, but I guess it's still OK. There are certainly some very nice touches to the framework, but no way is it worth £600.

531 Special Lightweight = 531 Professional (same stuff different name)which was about 150g lighter per average tubeset than 531 Competition.

This one's 501SL though....I've never seen that listed anywhere.

531 SL didn't last long as a "name" as it was changed to 531 Pro but same stuff. 3 main tubes only, the rest was standard 531.....

That's how I remember it :)

I'm sure that Raleigh's lightweight division brochure in the mid 80's had a bike made with 501SL can't recall the model name tho' :( .

matt
