Eddie Merckx ..Spalding..listed as racing bike

Falcon Merckx I'd assume.

Nothing special but reckon it'd make a cool 'pub' bike.

Wow ,were they really that bad ?

bad, when compared to a proper Merckx, but no worse than the usual Falcon/BSA/Carlton/Ammoco tat that you see around.

I think there was an era of bike production in the late 70's, possibly when road bikes became 'fashionable' in the US, where big European names were put on very mediocre bikes.

I've seen bikes with names such as Anquetil, Coppi, Ocana, Gaul on cheap steel frames, rubbish lugs/dropouts, cheap chromed headsets/handlebars, chromed rims, knuckle seatposts, cheap bolt on gear hangers, crappy weinmann brakes, 'safety brake levers'.....you know the sort of rubbish that should be avoided.
