Post subject:  South West Retro Ride - Sunday 12th Feb '12 - Haldon Forest!

So it's back to Haldon Forest, near Exeter, for a SW Retro Ride on Sunday 12th February. As Ajantom did such a good job on leading the last two rides we'll be following him again! There's only one carpark for those who got lost on the last ride!!!

Does anyone want to squeeze in a Dartmoor ride a couple of weeks later on Sunday 26th? I was thinking either Hameldown from Hound Tor or something towards Lustleigh from Haytor.

Here's a linky to Januarys Woodbury ride >>>

Here's a linky to the last time we rode at Haldon in December >>>

http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=168203

The rides for the following months March - June are looking like being:

1. Onza100's Plymouth ride >>>

http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=165084

2. Onza100's Dorset coast ride.

3. Minehead - we last rode in 2009 >>>

http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... t=minehead

4. ...and Burrington Coombe, Somerset.

(not in any order ^^^)

:D

Might be up for Haldon this time :-) Managed to sprain my ankle in the USA, so will see how that holds up first.

I should be okay for that date. Tell me what is the course like up there. I used to ride on the other side by the obelisk years back, and have not been on the ready made trails since they were built.

Well, as last time it will be a mixture of way-marked and off-piste trails. The official stuff is pretty good, fast rolling and good fun......and all the other stuff is pretty good too

As usual I will see how things go at work on the morning of the ride.

Dry as a bone up there today :-) lovely fast conditions.

Did 16.7 miles starting down at the Ley Arms in Kenn, so got to finish the ride with the South West's best piece of singletrack - St Andrew's Lane 8)

I got a GPS from my sister for Xmas and used it for the first time today - 2300 ft/700 meters of climbing - no wonder I was knackered!

aahhh see i have ridden woodbury since about 91 when i had a purple raleigh mirage with a lime green bottle cage which weighed 36 pounds!!!!!! i only recently gave it to my dad. Would love to race woodbury its changed so much since the 90s the quarry has really eaten into the place

Yep, I started up there in '90 on a lilac Saracen Traverse & swapped to a blue Trek 7000 the following year (steel was so 1980's!)
We did the last SW retro ride there - see the aftermath thread.

I'm not going to have to cart that blue stem around for another month am I Coomber? Ice pack & blast it with Ibuprofen (28p in Lidl) & you should be ok for 12th Feb easy provided nothing is broken.

Post subject:

Ha! Well its been two weeks and is getting better. I will try my best, would like to go so I'll play it by ear.

I've had so many injuries I should buy Ibuprofen by the bucketload really. There has to be a time when I become immune to it I reckon.

Keep the stem as a spare anyway chap

Sorry, I'm going to be missing this one. Was up there on Thurs, bit of ice but quite nice going. Just after the start of the red route there's some rock fall onto the trail, probably loosened by the frosts.
No cafe until Easter unfortunately but a small catering van there.

Not sure if we are going for certain but will be looking to entertain the idea to my mates!

Yep we want to got to st andrew lane at least!
Wont be on retro.

We normally only do certain parts of red run.

Time would be mid to late morning if all goes to plan!

I normally park down in Kenn, cycle up to Haldon via the old A38 road, and then St Andrews is the final downhill to the car. Nice! 8)

Ah we have been told of Kenn before (i think), is it some dh and north shore stuff there? Some guy was telling us about it but we didnt venture.

Author:  ajantom [ Wed Mar 07, 2012 1:30 am ]
Post subject:

DH stuff yes, but the north shore stuff is no more afaik.
Some of the jumps and stuff they've built are quite big!
Also some very nice steep singletrack runs on that side too.

Author:  cyfa2809 [ Wed Mar 07, 2012 9:05 pm ]
Post subject:

Singletrack is what we are interested in, wouldnt mind seeing the dh so we know for another time.

Author:  ajantom [ Wed Mar 07, 2012 11:10 pm ]

There's a shed load of singletrack around the hub end, you just need to know where to look
