WANTED - Uniglide 6 Speed - Smallest Locking Sprocket

woodbine

Dirt Disciple
The small sprocket on my 6 speed Uniglide (British Eagle late 80s MTB, Deore) is worn and causing the new chain to jump. Does anyone have a new    or good used one for sale?

Alternatively, does anyone know where else I should start looking?

Many thanks.

Thanks for your reply, Old School. Won't be getting the bike out 'til this weekend, so will have a teeth count. Supposing it's either 13 or 14 if I remember right.

Shouldn't be a problem getting it off. Came off last year after being on for best part of 30 years for a new Uniglide hub. I was in my local bike shop (Terrys, Yate, Nr. Bristol) and mentioned that I was getting my old bike back on the road after sitting in the back of the shed for almost 20 years. Miraculously the mechanic went out the back, returned, then asked if this is what I need - holding a brand new, old-stock, UG hub - mine for £30.

I'm slightly confused though as to exactly which Uniglide I have. You discount Dura Ace, but I there still seem to be several variants with names and terms like 600 EX, 600 XT, UG Ultegra, even Arabesque comes in somewhere.

My bike is late 80s approx, 6 sprockets on the rear UG hub, with the sprockets that have some (don't think it's all of them) teeth that are machined to appear slightly twisted on the tips. This is to aid the chain moving between sprockets. The derailleur just says 'Shimano Deore' on it. The shifters are Deore SIS.

So, which model of Uniglide do I have and what should I be looking to buy?

There should be a model number or name on the dust cap of the hub iirc, it's probably either Deore or XT. I'll have a gander at work tomorrow and see if we have anything spare, we have some NOS cassettes, but only road ratios I think.

You lucky mo$&*@(#?+#@!!! :x

I'm not an expert on this at all. But I know that Dura Ace won't work because I have an '85 Ritchey Ascent with a Dura Ace hub. On that hub, the splines are machined off of the last few mm so that the threads for the smallest cog are machined into the outside surface of the freehub body. Other uniglide groups have those threads machined into the splines, and therefore need a cog with a larger diameter.

AFAIK, all Uniglide cogs had the twisted teeth. If you have a cog with a different tooth shape, then maybe its from another manufacturer or a later Hyperglide cog.

Don't get a Dura Ace one! The threads are a smaller diameter & won't fit your freehub.

edit - have you tried getting the old one off yet?

Just counted the teeth from a photo. Will put some photos on in the hope that anyone can identify my set up, and hopefully help with that outer/smallest sprocket.

Thanks but nothing in that list is suitable. They're either Dura Ace, wrong number of teeth or to fit 7 or 8 speed versions.

Not going to be easy!
