You can use any rapidfire/sti shifter, whether it be 7,8 or 9 speed..period correct is 7 speed.
I've put STX RC (8speed) rapidfires on a 95 Bear Valley so will put an 8 speed cassette on to match, but you can still run 7 speed with them, you just 'click off' 8th gear and set your rear mech using 7th-1st.
