And today I did......

Saturday afternoons ride out with the little man.
Nice at first, good t shirt weather but it soon cooled right down as the fog/haar came in. Quite windy but a good couple of hours out.
Back out in a few minutes hopefully. Weather looks pretty much the same, lots of fog but sun shining here.

Re:

Construction work has begun in earnest for my new man cave.
At the moment the site is being cleared and prept up for the build to begin

I've spent the last few days rebuilding this. It was my daughter's bike, worked perfectly ok but in 8 years she had put barely 50 miles on it, so she gave it to me.

Needless to say it has now been completely apart, and that's where the problems were, getting it apart. Now it's back together and after a frustrating couple of days mucking around, fitted with mudguards. (Yeah, not usually a problem, but I've stuck 2" tyres on a bike designed for 38mm :) )

It's still not right for me. It needs a longer brake hose so I can fit a longer stem with my preferred bars. At the moment it is uncomfortable after about 30 miles because it's too short a position.

Motive - to have a weatherproof bike to ride up to Jamie's and back.

Looking very smart indeed mate :)
I have been working on a ride myself.
Trucker for me for the Audax brevet. I take it that the Hooper is running the Alfine or is that the Rohloff?

Re:

Brian it's not the stem that's the problem it's the bars, I've never understood why anyone would fit say a 100mm stem then fit bars that swept back 120mm terminating behind the steerer. Jones bars are a good example :?

Because.

I've also spent some of the day fettling a Cube.

First of all though I finally rationalised my collection of punctured tubes. Pumped them all up and have came away with one 700c and a few 26ers , must have nigh on 20 for the bin unless I can think of a suitable use ( never mind that they have been lying around for years).

Back to the cube, I've been mulling over for a long time about increasing the tyre size in my Plug. A comprehensive thread on stw hasn't really helped, whether to 650b it or go for fag paper clearances. All the while my old cx commuter has been getting shifted about from here to there. This can take a generous tyre and in fact the best time had was on a pair of 1.75 smart Sam's which the new bike will not entertain. So a plan was hatched for a flat bar and bar ended cantilever braked Mtb drivetrained creation using the Cube. The Plug will now strictly be a road bike, which it is very good at, and ill have a frankenbike for the gravel. Principally for Gritopia.

Anyway it's been good to get spannering on the bikes again, I've sorely neglected them and have a good few other jobs to get done. Enjoying it though rather than the chore it had become.

Re:

Sounds good Kaiser, hopefully that is you getting back into the swing off things and nothing like a bit of rejigging things to build the enthusiasm.
Been building up a little something myself this weekend.
Not for a final build type thing but more for a fit session to make sure the basics are right before investing in a paint restoration.
I built it up with a very eclectic parts bin mix that won't really reflect what will go on it when restored other than the Mafac Racers.
When I originally got this straight from the chicken shed storage it had been in for some years it had black guards and some Mavic M2 rims with 700 x 28 tyres. I cleaned and stripped it right away and pulled of the mix of road and mtb parts off it, most rusted or corroded beyond repair and thought I paid attention and took everything in. I have been slowly plodding away with this for quite some time trying to clean up and preserve the frame/paint or at the very least stop the corrosion and rust that was going on all over. Oxalic acid, scrubbing, touch up, waxing and while it needs proper paint to bring it back and stop completely it's not come up too bad. My issue today was the fitting of the Mafac brakes. When I got it it had no name sidepulls fitted and these were pulling from the opposite side from Shimanos finest, pulled them off a not nice but pretty corroded anyway. Now with the Mafacs they are at the deepest drop and without the mudgaurds it is such a huge clearance both front and rear that I am pretty sure this was built with 27' wheels in mind. This for me is a problem as clearance is already at the upper limit and is not an option.
It was only a short ride for about 2 miles and the only thing I needed to work was the brakes and the chain to see how it felt. It felt very very nice and so thats why the 27 thing took the shine off a bit.
Remember the builds only for a cruise round the block and I know the cables are too short and the rear derrailleur is a bit tight etc and this is because most was what either was lying about or was borrowed from the Mercian for the day. I have some really nice Nitto rando bars, stem along with a new Stronglight headset and other nice stuff for it when it gets finished. The Mafacs will stay maybe?/hopefully but the first gen Dura Ace cranks are for my BMX :)
Just thought I would share, especially seen as my usual ridding buddy has been building as well.
