How can this be a dead end - when klunkers as a concept was the evolutionary beginning of the mountainbike?

Nice bike though!!!!

For real?
I don't see klunkers flying off the assembly lines in china and taiwan for Trek, Specialized, Giant, etc.

Sure klunkers were a beginning for off roading but they were already at an evolutionary dead-end when they were briefly resurrected for that purpose.

You're totally missing the whole point of this month's BoTM and taking all the fun out of it.

For me a dead end is a design, component or material that never got beyond version 1 in evolution.

Disagree. You could try to execute a design multiple ways only to ultimately fail no matter what.

Take tension discs for example. 36H, 32H, in the end the design was just poor.

Do you use a coaster brake? Drum brake? Truss Rods? Saddle suspension? Not sure which ones of these weren't a dead end?

Im not so sure on this either to be honest, most of the list is still available, just lower down the food chain.

And when did internal 3 Spd become a dead end....? Sturmey Archer.
Suspension saddles...? Brooks.
etc.
