Interesting Motor Paced Stayer...

I received this yesterday... it is a bit of a mystery but might have a hidden story.



It is claimed to be a custom built frame from 1984 but appears to be mid 70s.




It is built like a tank, in fact it would probably demolish a tank. It has the biggest chainstays, they measure approx 26mm (std is 22mm). These bikes normally run big gears and the chainstay indent is evidence of that. This picture shows the indent compared to a normal Raleigh track frame.



I have a theory that I know what this frame is but I'm waiting for a couple of email replies before I can confirm it...

a little BB detail...

The seat tube and down tube are std BB sockets but the 26mm chainstays are fillet brazed.



there are no stamps, frame numbers or initials on this frame.

Are those chain stays actually fork blades? I had that done on a custom MTB build.

I don't know yet... but even round section track fork blades are only 22mm and these chainstays are approx 26-27mm. The fork blades are also slightly bigger than std.
 
Not like Raleigh to not stamp *something *one of their frames, even SBDU answered to the bean counters lol. Woodrup made a few back in my time...

My suspicion with this is that this frame is built by Jan le Grand, that is certainly being confirmed by others too. Interesting hint of old red paint just inside the head tube too.



Although most TI/Panasonic Team frames and SBDU frames did indeed have either an SB number or the rider's initials, Jan did build a few one off specials for certain riders and certain events, several of these have no markings.

Some TI-Raleigh riders in the mid 70s also had a long association with riding Presto (Jan le Grand) frames.
