Lug and frame identification needed please.

Hi....., purchased this bike today and still don’t know the frame model identification. The serial number starts WS8 then a six digit number, so I recon it may be a Carlton or Raleigh frame, made in Worksop in December 1978, but this is my interpretation perhaps someone can identify the model from the nice lug work attached. The crown headset lug has BCM stamped on it. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. It will then once more be given the lustre it truly deserves.

What’s the plan Rob? Strip down deep clean or re-build as a retro mod?

Hi Midlife thanks for the above . The serial number on the BB starts with WS8 then has a six digit batch number. I purportedly know where the bike was originally purchased (verbal) and today I plan to contact them to see what records they still have of the original purchase. My plan is to strip the frame, refurb and use as many of the parts that are on the bike in the rebuild. A project running well into next year.

My investigation into what this frame is continues to be a mystery.
The bike shop has confirmed that they did buy frames in to build up to customers specifications in the 70’s, but sadly no records still exist as to models, serial numbers and who purchased the bikes. They have also confirmed that the decal is one of theirs, they have been most helpful. Our thoughts are that it is either a Carlton or Raleigh so I still hope that someone can recognise the nice lugs and frame on the bike. The frame stamp is WS8002244. A full side on photo below. Any assistance in identification would be much appreciated. I intend to strip it down and remove the paint from the frame (it has been touched up in the past), then have it resprayed, then replace all the parts after a thorough cleaning. It would be nice to have it true to colour and with all the correct decals.

Hi PeachyPM it’s Rob not allen, but his bikes gave me another clue, but still a mystery frame. Don’t know if black was original colour, maybe all will be revealed when I get around to removing paint for respray. I love a mystery.

Lugs look a bit Oscar Egg. Ish?

Hi midlife . Just read up about Oscar Egg. Quite fascinating he made class lugs. As well as having a fascinating career. Not saying mine are class lugs, but nice anyway. Following my thoughts on Raleigh/Carlton. In allenh’s collection of bikes he has a Sun Snipe with what looks like similar lugs. I know Sun bikes were made at Worksop factory in the 70’s I think which would tie in with the frame number maybe.I also know they produced a racing bike frame about that time, but unsure of the model. I need to do a bit more sleuthing. Thanks for your contribution.

My instinct would be Raleigh / Carlton as well, the lugs looked very familiar and having had a look my Raleigh built Sun Super Snipe had them. That said though my Holdsworth Championship uses the same lugs and has similar treatment of the rear stays but the forks are totally different.
