I recently contacted Edinburgh Bicycle Co-Op and they informed me the frame was made in England by Falcon. It was £250 new in 1988. The continental name lives on in their modern range of bikes although it is now called the Revolution Continental.

I like that.
I know the co-op have had a reputation for good value, decent quality bikes under their own brand name, but I didn't realise they were doing them as far back as 1988.

The shop opened in 1977 and the Continental made an appearance in their first ever 1986 catalogue. Here is a picture of the Continental bike in 1986.
