SB1861 needing some work

Although it needs a lot of work, I couldn't resist this bike. It is an original owner bike, just very sad looking at the moment. Everything on this bike is as it was when it was originally built.

Time warp :) I was 17 years old at the time LOL Unusual to see FC 6200 kit at the time and the Cinelli stem is maybe into the 80's

I'd love a 70's SBDU but I think back then people were smaller and the 23-23 1/2 inch frames seem like gold dust......

Thank God the rear wheel is hanging onto the very end of the dropout, the original owner had a real sense of style :D :D

I can understand why a renovation is a good idea, but I really like the patina look on this - all aged perfectly together.
 
All this bike is going to get is a clean and polish of the frame and clean up of the rust. New spokes, tubs and lever hoods/bar tape - all the original kit will be staying. The guy I bought this from said the Shimano kit was the suggestion of the shop he bought the frame from. He wasn't the person that placed the order, but it appears the frame was ordered but never collected - it ended up for sale in the shop and he bought it new and built it up as it is.

I was looking on the Cinelli timeline and the 1R was apparently introduced in 1973, although the front cap would have been the original "Cinelli" word and not the later "C logo" - I think the C logo came in 78/79

Yes Shaun, I don't think that rear wheel could be any further forward in those dropouts without falling out!

Really? I cannot find any photographic evidence of the 1R in the pelotons until 1976 at the earliest. As research for my own timeline antics I've been looking at a lot of old photos- usually frustratingly low resolution pixelated photos- One unconfirmed sighting of Francesco Moser using a 1R in '76, Merckx and others seem to have moved from 1A to 1R for the '77 season.

I am a fan of that wall in your workshop btw- that colour must be the perfect foil/backdrop for all those red Raleighs..
 
I wouldn't be able to say it was 100% accurate but this timeline is typically good. I'm not a Cinelli guru so I take it at face value. There is reference to Cinelli 1R in 1973 with the "Cinelli" badge and then the switch to the 'C' logo in 78.

There is also a good table of Cinelli stem modifications and history when you scroll down the page. The 1R is listed with the old logo up until 78 and then the 'C' takes over. This bike was built part way through 78 and so has the 'C' logo in the stem

The only thing that didn't come off this frame without a fight was the drive side rear end adjuster, even after soaking in penetrating fluid overnight and as much heat as I dare give it, the head of the screw was just too soft and the adjuster snapped.






Having some good spares is always handy!
