You got to love Gumtree well I do especially today, This morning perusing the inter web came across this beauty in Gateshead it was silly money and liking a flashy paint job called to see if it was still for sale and lucky enough it was. So this afternoon drove over and picked it up wasn't disappointed one bit, it was a bit grubby and had a few chips here and there but nothing drastic.
It came with and athena chainset and bb mavic bullhorns with profile try bars and a Rolls Due saddle which I've never heard of.

I have to say I don't like the forks so they will be swapped out for a alloy set I got from a shogun team issue which has also supplied the build kit for this a complete 8 speed chorus 2nd gen I think.
The Cougar is all stripped now and I've just finished T-cutting the frame to get rid of most of the marks. I should leave it for now and think about bed but I may just go back out to the shed and fettle a little more. A good frame is like a good book you just can put it down.
more pics later

I did wonder that, having seen the label.

Mine is steel, and apart from the seat and headtube, I don't think has a round profile tube on it! I have heard of those saddles, but rarely see one. Normal Rolls are the most popular
Nice project Clive, agree about keenness to get on with it!

Cheers Mike

I'm glad someone's on the ball it didn't even twig last night when there was a magnet stuck to it
It was advertised on gumtree as an alloy tt frame but I'm not bothered I love it.

These are the forks I've got to use which are alloy  needed to cut down the steerer and do the threads

An this is the groupset which I had cleaned up when I took it off the shogun I won't be using the rear mech as I have the correct one for the build

So this as as far as I got last night the forks are a lot better but I might get them painted to match the frame as I'm not 100% sure on the alloy look I may just polish them to death and the see if I like them.

Re: 1997 Alloy Ahem "Steel" Cougar gumtree find

Finally got this finished last night, I didn't polish up the forks but will wait until a nice pair of time carbons turn up. The tyres are what I had lying around and when I can get some amber walls I'll be swapping them out too.

Re: 1997 Cougar Rethink

I never actually got round to riding this with its Chorus groupset the lame excuses where I didn't want to put shimano pedals on it or change the cleats on my shoes probably the main reason was I couldn't get the gearing low enough without going to a triple and spending more money on it.
So it's hung in the garage for the last 5 months just looking pretty and that bugged the hell out of me. I think its fair enough if they're a summer road bike you don't have to ride them in the rain especially if you have a bike more suited to the task and that for me has been my Olmo (which needs a really good clean  ). Anyhow with having organised a retro road ride in April it was time to sort this lazy cat out.
I know some won't like the carbon forks on the steel frame but I think it looks better for it. The only thing that stayed the same was the frame the Chorus has been replaced by an 8speed Shimano 6400 groupset including wheels (open 4cd rims), seat post and BB I tried modifying a 6400 headset to ahead but I failed as the headset wouldn't tighten up without becoming notchey so an ahead was sourced from the road for sale ads and the build commenced swiftly from there.
The only thing I'm not happy with is the bar stem it needs to be black and 100mm apart from that it all seem's to be running fine. Hope to be getting this out for a run tomorrow weather dependant :)
