So, a new Peugeot has joined the 653 but not sure what it is as it's been resprayed..The chrome stays, horizontal dropouts and engraved fork crown confirm either 531pro or 753 but not sure which, any ideas?

The serial number will give you the year. I know they used 531 Pro in 1988 but not sure whether used in 1987 or 1989. Both my 531 Pros begin B8, and I understand the 8 indicates 1988. I know 753 was used by Peugeot from 1987 until 1990, not sure whether outside these years. I have 2 753s, one of which begins B7, indicating made in 1987. My 653 begins with Y0, indicating 1990. So, the serial number could help determine. In terms of weights, the two 753s come out at 1747g and 1797g, forks 669g and 695g respectively. Only have weight of one of the 531 Pros and this is 2015g frame and 595g forks. Note, the 753s are 58 cm and the 531 Pro is only 56 cm.
Assume you have links for Peugeot catalogues, but attaching just in case.

Good luck.

Re:

Seat tube diameter may be different between 531p and 753 on Peugeot. My recall is a little sketchy.

Re:

Wow GREAT info there guys...many thanks. I know they did 531pro in 87 on a model called the Izoard, and in 88 as the Aravis, available in red/white or pearl white. 89 went to 653 instead on the 653 Ultima with 600 ultegra.
I'll check the frame no later and post back...many thanks again.

Hmm, size of seat posts got me checking.

Unfortunately, my new deluxe digital callipers too sophisticated for me to operate, so back to old mechanical ones.

753 less than 27.2, could be 27 or 26.8 and vaguely remember that tubing for French was slightly smaller than for UK. Know it's less than 27.2 because happen to have Dura Ace seat post that I know is 27.2 on my Gazelle 731 OS and the 753 is definitely smaller, so in the end my curiosity made me take the post out and there it was, Campagnolo 26.8 (also, discovered that after the winter we've had it was a good time to take the seat post out and re-grease ..).

Moving the callipers to the two 531 Pros and, voila, they are both smaller than the 753, so could be 26.4, but I can't be certain on the exact diameter.

You should now have a result, and my 753 won't have a seized seat tube so we should both be happy!

I don't think they were using the horizontal drop outs on 753 in 89. My 89 753 Z has vertical drop outs and doesn't have the stamped fork tops.

Have you been able to see any of the original colour around the fork steerer or in the bb ?

Re:

No they didn't but they used horizontal dropouts on both 753 and 531p in both 87 & 88.
It's a great idea to check if the original colour shows up, I'm planning to strip it down tomorrow night and if no colour is present then the frame weight should expose what it is.
Will post tomorrow...Thanks for the tips too Maca

Re:

Right all stripped down and the bare 52cm frame with seat bolt and bottle cage bolts still in weighs 1667gms..so must surely be 753!

Now to decide what parts to add!
