Raleigh SBDU 531SL build thread

So after a long wait for paint I've got a chance to build up the frame - SBDU SB1452 (H250) in 531SL from late 1976 or very early 77

I'm going to build this with a mix of parts, Suntour Superbe gears, Campag bits and pieces, Brooks saddle and some modern parts for good measure.

I always start with the seat post to hold the frame in the stand, then fit the forks. The seatpost is 27.2 mm, single bolt SuperRecord. Headset is a slightly bruised but otherwise fantastic EDCO Competition

Can't beat an EDCO headset for a frame like this, Raleigh fitted them to their top frames from the factory in the late 70's

That's a mighty fine BB tool

Reckon I was lucky to find the Edco in such good condition too.

The BB bracket tools are Cyclus - I've got a few of their tools now, they're tremendous.

I built up some wheels a couple of weeks ago, H Plus Son TB14 on period Record hubs.

For those who don't know the TB14s the quality is superb, nice and round out of the packaging. Classic box section, double eyletted, welded joints, machined braking surface and this is the polished finish. They build really nicely too. They're 23mm wide and I'm going for a 25 mm tyre.

First Gen Suntour Superbe, Campag Record pedals, modern Cinelli 1A stem. Going for speed on this one, chainset is 52-47 170 mm cranks. Quite how this stuff is in such stunning condition for late seventies components I just don't know. Here's a link to the catalog scan from 1977

I can't say enough about how good the H plus sons are - a bit heavy is the only negative I think.

I got some more done this afternoon. A big fight with the Vittoria's first up - really painful!

Record brakes, saddle, Cinelli bars, Super record brake levers, panto with a Rossin R but might as well be Raleigh

The darker colour you see in this flatter light is more like it than the brighter red in the sunshine.

I don't have a block yet - looking for a nice tight 6 speed Suntour Winner and then cables and bar tape, can't decide at all

Silly question but are the rear brake blocks on the "stabbby" 70's campag brakes the wrong way round?
