2013 Somec Rex.

High Gear

Dirt Disciple
Hi guys. I decided it is time to post a few of my bikes. You have a great forum/web site. I have sent in catalog scans in the past, but only started posting today. I'm a bit of a retro guy. My love is Italian steel. I have been riding seriously since '89. This is my '13 Somec Rex, built with '97 Record Titanium, except hubs.

Recently built wheels. Used Record hubs laced to NOS Campagnolo Omega XL 32 hole clincher rims. Tires are Vittoria Open SC 25mm.

hello there, looks really clean.how did the build go ?
If you are referring to the wheels, it has been a rough road. I had the old timer at the shop build them. Got them home to put the Vittoria Open SC's on. The nightmare began. I never in my life had a set of tires go on so hard. Broke two tire irons. I get the wheels on and the front is running out 1/8". That was caused by the insane amount of leverage I needed. Back to the shop to fix 'em. Oh, I forgot to mention the lock ring fiasco. Turns out these hubs are early 9sp. That takes a 16mm threaded lock ring. Campy only ran this size for 2 or 3 years before going to the 17mm that was used on the rest of the 9 and 10 speed era. Had a hell of a time locating one. Tomorrow is the maiden voyage! I picked up one of these just in case I have a puncture. Hope those Vitt's stretch a little.

Re:

ive had some tyres well tight before and had to use metal tyre lever's, my plastic ones at the mo are'topeak'.id just like to congratulate you on the build and your presentation, and look forward to seeing more of your future builds.

That bike is lovely! Very very nice indeed! personally I wouldn't have gone with white tyres, but then again they do match the tape and saddle well (while still clean!)

I just had them on for a short time. I replaced them with the good old standard, Vittoria Open SC's with the para sidewall.

The Somec has a stiffer ride. Same geometry as the De Rosa. The seat stays are thicker on the Somec, and could add to this. I did a wheel swap and did notice compliance. That is what brought me to build up different wheels. I was told more than once that if I change out the seatpost for a Campy Ti, that will help too. Can't bring myself to do that since it is pantographed.

thank you for answering my request of the extra close ups Hg its quite different=good.m interesting concept of changing seat posts to increase lateral spring?, an extreme version could be the modern trek domane[ally] with de coupler system involving the whole seat tube moving .

i agree with you keeping th s post as a set.
