I thought Carlton used the capella lugs for the 50-60's ?

I have a frame number off the bottom of the left rear drop out, 0199464.

No letters

According to the useful Carlton Cycles site, seven digit frame numbers were used between 1968 to 1972.

Mine is six figure 238355, and is probably '71-'72.

The one i linked to in the earlier post is 224768, and is '71.

As Spokesman thought, yours might have been made using older lugs.

Capella lugs were introduced around 1959 and replaced a host of other lug designs Carlton used in the 50s. They were used until around 67 when Crespera sort of took over all frame lugs, except a few. Finding Capella lugs on this machine presents a few questions indeed. It may well be just mopping up old lug sets or perhaps the frame is older - the number will give a clue, possibly, but from around 68-72 Carlton dropped the letter prefix, except for some higher end models. I think the frame has been updated at some point with new parts, as the copper flam finish looks original as that finish sort of appeared in the very early 70s I believe. Could be a one off anomaly, a Friday afternoon special perhaps!

Hi, just a bit of info that might help, the 'Ten' first appeared in Carlton Catalogues in 1966. Terry

A bit of an update. Its been slow progress as I'm divided between a 1955 Ariel Square Four and a 1969 BSA Bantam, its all bike related :) There are not enough hours in a day, and definitely not a weekend! Also I hope to have the re-chroming back for the F R Russell I'm rebuilding in another post this week, so that will be another project on the move.

The Carlton is looking tidier but there are plenty of chips (patina :) ) on the paintwork. Actually, I like an old looking bike that is cleaned and polished it shows its character :)

Hope to have the wheels back on soon although I hate cleaning wheels!

I've not found anything to indicate a date except a philips crank axle which is stamped 1973, the cups are non matching Brampton so as Spokesman was quick to spot, it looks like its had some updating in the early 70's.

Gorgeous. Love it. With just enough polished bling alongside the more patina of the old frame. That really has made my day. Great work.
