I have a 90's Raleigh M-Trax 6000R which runs great on the road and was a real cheap option to get into road bikes.

However, in order to stay alive round where I live (heavy traffic on one main road) it's safer to use quiet roads but these are linked by dirt tracks (unsuitable for skinny wheels/tyres).

Rather than keep getting off my bike on dirt tracks I would prefer to keep riding so thought of partially converting the bike to Cyclo-Cross style (wider wheels/tyres).

Has anyone done this - is it possible?

I know I could ride my MTB anywhere instead but the road bike is so much quicker on tarmac and don't really want to slow down on longer rides!

However, if I do convert, will the cyclo-cross tryes lose the "road" advantage?

The 'Big Cheese' has a thread on a 'Winter Fay.' Have a look at that. I suspect it depends on how much clearance the frame has.

It's a 'Winter Norman', using the builder's first name.

Clearance for the larger tyres - plus mudguards - is the only real possible problem.

To get mine ready for the winter, I fitted a wider range cassette, 50t front ring and those Schwalbes.

So far, it has been a good move. Although my frame has canti mounts, most budget dual pivot callipers like the Tektro models have quite a bit of clearance.

a few cheap dia compe models left: ... e=googleps ... _500wt_922
