I know bugger all about road bikes, but I don't think all Merckx are necessarilly that good, - didn't they do a cheapo range in the 80s?
-This one has pressed dropouts etc and doesn't look that exciting at all to be honest.
 
I've seen a thread elsewhere (possibly lfgss), where someone explained that Merckx did indeed have his name put on some cheap sh*t supermarket bikes. I think the headbadge is the giveaway here... ;)
