Below a picture of my current MTB, a Van Tuyl Foco of 2001.
A custom frame built by the Dutch framebuilder Gijs van Tuyl. As far as I know only 3 ever produced with this design/tubing by Van Tuyl.

Image

Originally I had built the bike with a Rond/Magura Quake C, tailored by Rond to fit the frame, but nowadays I like to have a rigid fork installed. The picture shows the bike with Hutchinson TopSlick Airlight, but I usually ride with the Conti Twister Supersonic.
I always have ridden steel frames. The specs below show that a steel bike can still be lightweight.

Specifications:
Frame: Steel, Columbus Foco tubing
Fork: Carbon, rigid
Wheels: Mavic CrossMax ST
Tires: Continental Twister Supersonic
Brakes: Magura HS33
Pedals: Time ATAC XS carbon
Rear mech: SRAM X.O.
Front mech: Shimano XT
Cranks: Stronglight Rockstrong
BB: Shimano XT
Chain: Shimano XTR
Cassette: Shimano Dura-Ace 9sp 11-23
Chainrings: TA
Cables: Gore Ride-On
Stem: Kore Lite
Bar: Ritchey WCS
Barends: Pro, incl. titanium bolts
Grips: Onza
Headset: CaneCreek S2
Saddle: Flite Titanium (165gr.)
Seatpost: Kore Lite
Total weight: 8.2 kg

Planned upgrades:
- PACE RC31 / Ritchey WCS carbon
- Synchros stem

My previous bikes:
Specialized Rockhopper Comp, 1992
Marin Pine Mountain, incl. Judy SL, 1995

Thanks,

I have used the Topslick tires for one of my few tarmac weekends. Always nice to see that one can be as fast as a road bike then  . Next week I shall have the Twisters installed again. If I get a change I shall post pictures of that configuration.

Regards, J.

Hello everyone,

After a couple of years an update on this bike:

Frame is resprayed (in Volve Barents Blue) and after some itterations in specs I now have the configuration that suits best with one of the best ride possible for this frame.

Specs as-is-now;
Van Tuyl steel frame with Columbus Foco tubing
Pace RC-31
Magura HS33
XO rear
M739 front
Dura Ace 12-25 cassette
Use Ti post with SLR saddle
Specialized Ti stem
X-Lite Ti handlebar with Specialized S-Works grips
Hope headset
Stronglight cranks with Pace rings. FSA Ti BB axle.
Look S-Track pedals
Wheels built by Ernie Frieke from BikeBoosting (recommended!): DT Swiss 240S with ZTR rims. 1300 gr. for the set.
Ringle Twister skewers
Nobby Nic 1.8 tires (becoming quite rare now)
Bike weight: 8.5 kg.
