Bloke I work with has had to come out of the saddle following a neck injury and as a consiquence was having a cull of bikes and bike parts. He stopped me by the kettle to offer me a his full-sus marin frame, but as full sus isn't really my thing, and I knew he had this bike, I said.. "nah.. but, if you ever are selling your mango stumpy mate.." I was part joking, fully expecting him to tell me to bugger off - but to my total surprise he offered it me at a silly low price

Anyway, he's owned this a very long time from new, and used it through many winters as a commuter bike - so it's far from mint. Some parts have been swapped where worn out, the front wheel is red mavic 515 on specialized hub, rear is 717 on parallax. V brakes, ritchy flat bar, Mostly XT gears - I'm assuming that the rear mech, rear wheel, crankset and saddle are non original.

Be lovely to get it back to spec, (and perhaps even clean it!). I know virtually nothing about specialized bikes, so ... Is it standard spec stumpy or one of the higher spec models? Is that 515 rim an upgrade or original?? Is it even actually a '98?

Spoke again with the guy who'se bike it was... tells me it's a special edition of some sort (hence the red X517 on the front and not the normal stumpy rims) I have a set of "son of strongarm" cranks to suit the original, a neighbour has taken a serious interest in the bike so I think it needs a good clean and fettle - will be lovely with a good service and a handfull of new parts I think.

Yup, it is a '98, as confirmed by the 8 at the start of the serial number and the gusset between the head tube and down tube which wasn't there in '97.
The same frame would be used for the M2, the M2 Comp and the M2 Pro with different components. I would guess with XT shifters and front mech that it would be a Comp or Pro as my boggo '97 M2 had LX for these and only an XT rear mech.

Cranks, saddle, rear mech are wrong. Is the seatpost a Ritchey and does the stem have the S on the front cap?
Front hub is correct as is radial lacing but doubt the red rim is original. You should be able to get full specs from Bikepedia.

These are awesome light stiff frames that reward you if you hammer them, as I was able to do in '97. I no longer have mine as it's not so much fun when you are fat old and slow! Still miss it a bit, but probably miss the ability more.

Forks are newer than 1998, perhaps Y2k? Looks like it'd benefit from a really good clean and bit of an upgrade with some parts. I'd swap out the forks with some SIDs in black, they'd look the nuts.

Re:

Thanks chaps.

I think at the very least it would be better for a proper spech saddle and ritchey seatpost, He actually gave me most of the XT rear mech in a carrier bag of bits, it just needs new sprockets changing and a realy good clean.. like the rest of the bike

Well tonight after coming in from work and mowing the lawn (didn't bother on the bank holiday, that would be to obvious) I stripped the mango right back to the frame in under 15 mins, new record I think. Frame is stupidly light.. I'll have to get some pics as i clean and rebuild it

Re:

Got carried away, sorry no progress shots during the strip down and rebuild.

Feel a bit bad the Manitou magnum shock has stayed on, the frame really deserves better. The bike was cheap to me - and is going to a neighbor. If I was keeping it myself I'd fork out (see what I did there?) on some SIDs or Bomber superfly Z2. Will probably point out to the new owner that a better fork would be a really nice upgrade - so down to them if they want 'em I'll certainly fit 'em....

Factoring in the new cranks (thanks like_clockwork!) cassettte, seatpost, stem, brakes, pedals, cables, chain, some period tyres I've probably ended up slightly out of pocket by a quid or two - but that's not the point. I just want to spread the retro :)
