tiny Rockhopper

I'm building up a bike for my daughter. I realised that for 1/2 the price of an Islabike she could have decent mountain bike.

Because I've always like specialized, I kept an eye out for a teeny rockhopper frame and one appeared on here about 4 weeks ago. A nice 1998 FS in a lovely blue

luckily at the same time a set of rigid forks in the same colour came up locally on ebay, so that seemed too good to miss.

Haven't decided on a build plan yet. I've got nearly everything to build it in original spec from another Rockhopper FS, but most of those bits are on my partners old Marin Muirwoods.

Might have to do a bit of re-jigging...

Anyway this is what it looks like now

The frame had quite of lot of stone chipping so a quick trip to tesco yielded this:

which is a suprisingly good colour match.

A quick cover up job, wash, t cut and wax and its looking pretty good.

Some progress, I think its looking pretty good but still need to decide whether to rip the kit off the missus' other bike or track down the bits I need.

Re:

Here are some more pictures, its far from period correct, being made up of what I had lying around and a few ebay bargains

* 14" 1998 Rockhopper FS with rigid forks
* Specialized hubs and ritchey rims from my old Rockhopper FS of the same year
* 1 x 10 driveset consisting of SRAM X7 and shifter and M750 chainset
* M739 brake levers and SRAM 3.0 v brakes (NOS apparently)

I swapped the strongarm chainset for the xt one, partly because it was too long but mostly because the chain rings were bent.

Finishing kit is from my old rockhopper so the stem is a little long and will get changed at some point.

That's a great looking Rock Hopper, those were always great bikes. I've been working on a tiny Trek 930 for my wife who is only 5' tall, and she's been riding it with me though I still have a few tweaks to make. One of the first things I did was swap out the uber long factory stem. I used a threadless adaptor and then installed a short stem, which really improved things for her. So, so far so good.:)

Re:

Couple more changes. I picked up some 1999 Judy XC forks and after an oil and seal service and quick trim of the steerer tube they fit nicely onto the rockhopper. I've swapped the slicks from some WTB velociraptor tyres and now its ready for off road use
