My current rebuild was purchased as a single speed but for proper off road hilly used i will need lower gears for climbing so already have an 9 spd shifter to hand.

There are lots of 1x9, 1x10 and even 1x11 but has there been front mech with single speed?

It is a compromise but is it workable? I tend to find i use the 3 or 4 gears in the middle of the cassette and one or two of the larger sprocket with granny for steep climbs. The big chainring comd to use on roads mostly.

Problem you'll have is most ss tensioners won't have the ability to take up the slack, so you'll end up using a rear mech.

The worst of both worlds.

I have a 3-speed rear wheel with a built in drum brake, laced into a 26" wheel. Stopping not as good as a disc, but if you have a decent front brake you'll be OK!

No longer set up like this, but 36/46 front, 17 tooth rear, sprocket aligned to the middle of the two chainrings and a Paul Melvin taking up the tension. A gear that works well on the road and a gear for off road. Easy.
