My son is 11y old now and his 24" Specialized was beginning to look small under him.
So I kept an eye out for the right frame in the various classifieds and scored this beauty:
a lightly used 2009 Yeti DJ. Iconic colourway, short top tube and promise of solid handling.

What's not to like?

The build is not retro, rather an ecclectic mix of parts of all ages, 5-10-15y old.
Wheels, brakes and gears are all well used but light and very dependable.
There are some retro touches like the original dimpled Syncros headset and XY post.

The solid DJ geometry and bigger 26"wheels give the kid a real boost in confidence,
The 1x9 drivetrain is set up with a 34t ring and perfect for his strength and the trails.
