Kona King Kahuna '98 - TST factory tabs

Kona King Kahuna 1998

Disc brakes found. Rather lucky to have gotten hold of these rather nice (new) beasties

Came with a new front 180 rotor and an almost new 160 rear, plus a bunch of IS adapters thrown in for good measure :D

Hoses are silver braid (Kevlar).

Re:

The only one I wish I had not let go.. and now cannot afford. Well done on jumping on this one. I just didn’t have the funds.

I had a set of Marz marathons on mine which had a lowering kit.

Re:

Thanks for the kind words. The larger HH/KK frames don't come up often, so when this appeared in the US, with the factory disc-tabs, I took the plunge and sold off the 97’ Hei Hei.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted on the build progress.

Incidentally, I had pair of 02’ 80mm Marathon S forks set-aside (great with the lock-out) but in the end just wanted to go with something a little less generic taking a cue from the orange Kona ‘Thumbs Up’ decal and the KK team builds of both Ryder Hesjedal and Dario Cioni that both raced the Marzocchi Z1.

The course is now set and I have a pretty good idea on the final build outcome.

Going full hog with a full 9 speed M952 set-up, via a 11-34 M970 XTR cassette. Why the change? Whilst being lighter than the earlier M952/3 cassettes, it also integrated a much stronger spider-design, whilst being Shimano’s lightest ever cassette.

Chris King 32h disc hubs will complete the build. Just needing rims, a decision on the bars and a recoup on finances!

A few more things still to get..

Re: 1998 King Kahuna -blank canvas

 some nice parts coming together, should ride nice as well as look good. Looking forward to more pics :)

Re: 1998 King Kahuna -blank canvas

Thanks dude.

Few decisions still to be made out there such as choice of rims. Contenders are XM317 / XC717s, or go tubeless, with a pair of Mavic UST or the older-graphic Stans 355s rims if I can find.

Also thinking about ditching the Syncros in favour of a moderate rise Azonics instead.
