Airnimal Joey - pimped a little

I swore I'd never get a folding bike, but fate dealt me a hand I had to play. After much research, I decided that if I had to have a folding bike, it had to be a good one; step up Airnimal. I plumped for the stock joey sport as the basis for my build and set about making it my own (especially as the day I picked it up, I saw the exact same one on my commute home, and u couldn't have that).

After some changes here and there, it's ended up quite nice imho, with the only stock parts left being the frame, seat post and headset (which I will change for either a Chris king or hope). Not sure if the saddle will stay, have a full carbon jobby or a nuke proof Sam hill awaiting).

I'll add the full spec when I have more time, but it's wearing xtr m98x gearing, hope/sun ringle wheels, formula brakes, fsa chainset (bb386) and some rather lovely pace rc24 custom forks courtesy of fork English (top work).

I'd appreciate any feedback, my view is that if you are going to do something you really don't want to do, do it in style....

Looks very nice, very stealth :D Very good on the forks, were they expensive, as Ive seen a folding bike custom specialist guy charge a horrid amount for a fork a disc can fit on :?

Re:

Cheers. Fork wise, justbackdated made them for me. I can't remember whether I supplied a donor fork or if he provided everything, but it was no more than a good set of rc31s.

I think exotic do a 24 inch version, some airnumals are specced with a carbon fork which I think is an exotic.

Airnimal seemed interested in my fork at one point but needed volume.

I still have the original disc only fork.

How does the steerer work on this :?(the upper bottle shaped bit) Is it something fork english needed to do as well or just the shortening of the legs.

And info on the disc rear ?. Ive one of them IS/Hope mounts could retrofit on the rear as the one im watching doesnt seem to have mounts.

Exotic 24"

Re:

You don't need to worry about the forks, standard 1 1/8 is all you need. The bottle shaped bit has a notch that fits/helps with alignment, and you clamp it all up with a qr. It's the one part I've not taken off the bike so not inspected it too much.

Rear disc mount is just an is standard.

Not too difficult a job...I shortened a set of RC31s in a similar way...just 40mm off the legs.

Heated the dropouts with a hot air gun (keeping it off the carbon as much as possible) while twisting and pulling. At around 80ºC the epoxy will fume and fail.
Cleaned up the dropout sockets, cut the legs down and re-bonded the dropouts in a fork jig.

I wouldn't touch the crown end, though.

All the best,
