I picked up this bike for $60 last week. I'm just fixing it up and flipping it. It's a medium. I ride a large so that prevents me from wanting to go overboard with the build.

The stem is ugly and the seatpost is bent so both are getting replaced. I have a Easton Aluminum stem with only a slight rise. It's a bit heavier than you would think so this is a good time to move it on. I also have a seatpost that will fit and some shifters/levers that will be an upgrade and a rear derailleur for it.

I've ordered the cheapest disc brake set ever made. It was $28.99 on amazon. I think they are a BB5 knock off. They work with bb5/bb7 pads. I've also ordered the worlds cheapest disc brake hubs. I think they are coming from China. They won't get here for a couple weeks.

Re:

I had a little time to work on the bike. I need to find a new LX front derailleur. The one I have is a top pull and this needs a bottom pull. Once the hubs get here I can lace up the wheels and set up the brakes. What you see here is just a donor set of wheels to see how the brakes go together. My only complaint with this brake set so far is that the included cables aren't very long. If this were a full suspension or a large frame these wouldn't fit.

Re:

The worlds cheapest disc brake hubs came early. Now I just need to make sure I have spokes that will work and I can start lacing them up.

Re:

I'd be curious to know what those hubs are really like, as all I've read about them is the usual chinglish ravings in the product description from the sellers of these things. Generally, we shouldn't expect too much from them, but I've not been disappointed with some Chinese stems, handlebars, seatpost and narrow wide chainrings.

I'm curious about how they will be too. The berings are smooth. Unfortunately I ordered 32 hole hubs and the old rims are 36 holes. Now I'm trying to figure out what way to go with this. I'll most likely just send these back and reorder. I'm also trying to come up with a decent bottom pull front derailleur to match the shifters. The one I have is top pull. I'm now a bit delayed on what I wanted to be a quick flip. Oh well.

Re:

I assume you're in the states then, given that your post mentions a $60 purchase?
If you were in the UK, I could probably help you out with a cheap front mech (riding 1x, I have a few kicking around) and possibly a 36h front hub. The problem is postage won't be economical to the states.

Thanks for the support but of course you are correct. Shipping is probably more than the value of the parts. There is a local bike shop here that functions as a charity for underprivileged city kids. They collect used bikes and strip the parts. They then teach the kids to build a bike. They always have a good selection of used parts for sale too. I just check with them regularly and eventually the part I need will turn up.

Re:

Well look what just turned up today. Project cheap flip is back on track. :D I've already ordered spokes and I found an XT front mech to match the rear. I might have this built and sold by the end of next week.

Can i ask how much do you think youll make in project flip?

Ive bought 2 bikes in last year, cheap that very soon became non kepers so i sold on ebay and just about broke even.

Doesnt seem to be any money in flipping, it certainly doesnt compensate for hours spent.

I'll let you know what I make when it's actually sold. I'll be about $200 into it by the time I'm done. For me it isn't about the money so much. I enjoy the hobby and if I can help get someone new into the sport then it's worth it. If I make $100 I will be fine with that. The money will just go toward a new part for a bike I'm keeping or the next project bike. This is just fun for me.
