Realised that the gf isn't going to get the MTB bug (she likes road cycling though  ) - so time to shift this nice little Clockwork that I got for her.

Pretty sure it's a 1998 - having looked at the Orange catalogues for 98/99 it seems to be anyway!

This is quite a nice little time-capsule, 99% original bits, and in very good (but ridden) condition........

- Orange Clockwork Steel frame, in rather nice grey/silver. 15" C2C seat tube, 17" to the top of the seat tube. 20" C2C top tube & 22" effective top tube. Pretty sure they counted this as their 15" model?
- Manitou Spider forks.
- Full 7spd Deore LX (M570) - Rear mech, shifters, hubs, crankset - but a newer XT front mech.
- Avid Speed Dial 5 brake levers.
- Avid Single Digit 5 V-Brakes.
- Mavic X517 SUP rims.
- Velociraptor F+R Tyres.
- Orange Hotrod bars.
- Orange ahead stem.
- Orange straight seatpost.
- Bontrager barends.
- Viscount saddle.
- It's missing the seatpost collar at the mo' (robbed it for another bike!) but I'll replace it.
- No pedals, but I could include some old LX SPDs.

On the 2 or 3 rides my gf took it on there were no problems. All the cables are fine, and it shifts, brakes, etc. ok. All the components are in good condition - no foot rub on the cranks for example!

Couple of the stickers are scuffed, and it does have one or two scratches in the normal places - toptube from bars, headtube from cable rub, etc.

I'm after £220 for the whole lot. I'd rather it was collected (Posting whole bikes is a hassle!!!) but I could post at cost if needed :)

Yes I’m pretty sure it’s a 1998 as I think that was the only year they used the hilarious AAD sticker. Definitely size 17 - but I don’t think the top tube c-c can be 20” though – I think it’s 21.5 surely, which is much more reasonable. Is it really 7-speed? I didn’t know they made M570 in 7-speed. And isn’t the seat post a Syncros?

Here's a shot of the 1998 Geometry:

If this is the 15" (it's 15" c-c, and 17" to the top of the seatpost collar) then the top tube length is 524mm/20.4" c-c, giving an effective horizontal TT of about 22".

It's definately a 7spd. Shifters are 7spd rapidfire pods, and the cassette is a 7spd block. Hubs, mechs and c'set are defo the grey anodised M570 ones, I'll have a closer look at the shifters and block to see what model they are.

Having looked again the seatpost may not be an Orange (I just assumed it was, as all the other bits were original Orange kit) - I can't see Syncros on it anywhere though & there are no decals. How can one tell?

It's definitely a size 17 and they do measure from centre to top (of seat tube), so 54.4cm was what I had in mind. Not trying to be clever, just that my 98 E4 is a size 17 too. It's better that it's a 17 as a 15 is really quite small and therefore worth slightly less.

The seatpost just looks identical to a Syncros, but I suppose it's possible that they made a copy of a Syncros for their 98 range. The catalogue picture below is inconclusive, and a bit of a comedy because I think the weird look was because they put all the seatposts on back to front for the catalogue shoot.

Not trying to hijack your thread. It looks a nice bike - and a hell of a lot better than the one in the catalogue!

Cheers :D

So it IS a 17" model - not a 15". Very confusing way they had of measuring! Almost everyone else measures c-c not c-t.

I'll take some better close-up photos of the post.

Well I've had an offer of £180 (so about £200 posted) from a guy over on STW. So he's got a bargain! :D
