For sale I have a very nice 1993 hand-built (brazed) Raleigh Peak frame and hand-made cro-mo brazed fork. It's so nice I'd keep it for myself, but sadly it's way too small for me.

It's had very little use, less than 10 km judging by the mintness of the groupset that came with it. The paintwork is in really great condition, except for a handful of small spots of corrosion.

Frame is straight, and the bottom bracket and mech hanger threads are in excellent condition. Note the shot in seat says, which improved the strength of the seat stay / seat tube join. Combined weight of frame, fork and headset = 4.2 kg (9.3 lb).

Seat tube 17.25 centre to centre, 19 inch centre to top, top tube 22 inch centre to centre. 150 mm length head tube, 1-1/8" headset and 27.0 mm seat tube. 135 mm rear hub spacing.

The top tube decal has been carefully removed by the original owner, but the components (1993 Deore LX and no suspension) mark this as a Peak.

Also included is the headset. The headset's cable stop thing is a bit of a corroded mess for some reason, but I include anyway.

The cleanest chainstays I've ever seen on a used bike:

To be fully open about the condition, which is pretty good overall, here are photos showing the few spots of oxidation:

1. The bottom bracket threads are perfect. There are a few minor spots of oxidation (and a bottle cage bolt washer has oxidized).

2. The German sticker suggests this was originally sold by the ZEG retailer, in Germany.

I knew I forgot something

I'll add seat tube and top tube lengths tomorrow morning.

Going by the colour it looks like the Ravine.

Frame size added now added (17.25" centre to centre).

Without the top tube decal, it's a bit of a puzzle. The Ravine would have come with an Altus groupset, but this bike had full Deore LX, which would mean it has to be one of the Peak / Apex or Summit, but apparently in an alternative colour scheme.

Out of interest what tubing is this made from?

Re: Raleigh Peak handbuilt frame/fork, Reynolds K2, 17.5",1993

It's made from Reynolds K2 cromo steel tubing. Quoting Terry Bill (of Reynolds):

"K2 was a special tube set made for Raleigh. I have no records, but from memory, it was a 501 CrMo material, and had 8 flats along its full length (not butted). It was one of the earlier “oversize” tube sets. 31.8 down tube, 28.6 top and seat tube. The flats (laterally aligned ribs referred to by Raleigh) would only be for about 2/3rds in the seat tube so the pillar could be entered.

The concept of tubes with 8 flats along the length was first used by Reynolds in their 700 Classic road tube set, but it was not popular with the small builders, they wanted to use the “butted” term when selling frames, and we withdrew it.

Raleigh then adapted it for their K2 mountain bike range. The K2 top and down tubes had 8 flats along the length and no butt. The seat tube was only flats for part of the length so the seat pillar could be fitted. Raleigh did this because they felt the flats gave extra stiffness to the frame, to stiffen the BB shell to stop the sideways movement when pedaling."
