very rare Cornelo (colnago build?) as new

Retro Newbie
Hi,

I recently purchased 2 Cornelo mt.'s from 1990. One of them is to small for me and that's why I'm selling it.
It is an "as new" Cornelo mtb with Shimano exage 400 groupset. Cornelo's where made by a dutch specialist who had the frames made in Italy, apparently by Colnago, so I heard from several sources. I don't know of that is completely true. There is only limited info on the web. Cornelo made mainly road bikes and this was their first attempt to jump on the MTB craze.
He had the frames painted in Belgium and assembled in the Netherlands. All of his bikes where excellent builds in those days and the are highly appreciated here in the Netherlands. This frame is made from Columbus Gilco tubing which has an unique "profile"
Like more MTB's of that era you have al the mounting points for mudguard, racks etc. I got this bike from the original owner who purchased a set in 1989/1990 (he was not sure). 1 for himself and 1 for his wife. His own bike was well used and shows it. This bike belonged to his wife and she had only ridden it a very few times on the road( 2 times he said and he was still annoyed about it) when it was stored in the garage. Please follow the link for pictures of it.

I want 150,- for this bike.
The bike is currently in the Netherlands and I can ship it to the UK for about 38,- euro. Well packed in a bicycle cardboard box.

I remember reading an article about Cornelo once. I believe, if memory serves me right, that this was a Dutch in-house brand for which production was outsourced to price-competitive manufacturers. This bike isn't made by Colnago but is very likely Italian for the era stated. The only downside is that Cornelo had no problem outsourcing to Taiwan, China etc so where this was made cannot be definitative. It is still a very tidy looking bike with good equipment and in great condition for the money though!

Thanks for the info. I was aware of the fact that this was an in-house brand. I live 19 kilometers away from where their shop was. Some of their frames where downright almost exact copy's of Colnago's from that era. And the owner seemed to have know Ernesto personally very well. Colnago or one of their cheaper brands where making frames for other manufacturers so it is not impossible. In fact the only other MTB's I could find with this Gilco tubing where colnago's . Again I'm not saying it is made by Colnago but I like the idea so much that I'm keeping the larger vernon of this bike myself. It's not only facts :D Sometimes the romance of that era ad something extra.

That was a very interesting read. I never realised Colnago was so effectively faked for so long.
So the Colnero is dutch made, Belgian painted with Gilco tubing, sounds a bit like an Eddy Merckx - all for a £150 - that is a proper bargain.
A PM is sent!!!

cavalier, Did you get my PM? I'm not sure whether it is sent. It seems to be still in my outbox folder.

Hello Jos,

I've just opened my personal emails. Sorry I'm a bit old and only open them once a day. I'm actually old enough to remember the early 1990s!!!
I'm happy to go ahead, just let me know if everything is still OK,

Jon B
