WTD: Car ...... For bike & dogs

I think I need to be upfront regarding this .......

We (Mrs LMTTM & I) are looking for a second car to replace our trusty 206 who is off to the breakers at the en of the month

We are not looking for anything grande or expensive but reliable and safe.

Any suggestions as to a care you may be looking to move on or good suggestions as to what to look for ?

my mate is soon to be selling a 1997 toyota lucida 4x4 2.2 diesel. plenty of room for dogs and bikes, especially with some of the seats removed. it will have 12 months mot but probably no tax and i think he'll be looking for around £12 to £1300

sorry but these are prone to headgaskets and are very thirsty


I'd steer clear of Renaults as they have crazy faults although early meganes seem pretty good. You know what went wrong with your 206 so you know what to look for in another. some of the cars above are cheap tax too and all are farely low milage.

any non turbo diesel will be slow, especially any VAG 'SDi' they have about 68bhp and take a year to get anywhere and have worse MPG than the turbo version

early Jap diesels are thirsty compared to Euro models

pick a common engine such as the Peugeot / Citroen/ Fiat 1.9 turbo diesel, service parts will be cheaper - Bosch MAP sensor for my missus doblo is £23 compared to £48 for my VW despite the part number being identical

Fiat Doblo is a bargain and will take dog, bike, house and more - interior is a bit fragile though - Fiat audio speakers are awful and need ripping out as soon as you get in it.

they are also big and cheap. they are prone to go at around 80k. this has done 100k so its either a good one or its been done.

30-40 mpg average which isnt great, but its not too bad either. they are the best mpv around!

Sorry, but you will be lucky to get thirty or less if its the 2.2 diesel - my friends 4x4 Lucida gets around 22mpg fully loaded and his is relatively low miles and as good a condition as you can get. He also sells them.

he wouldnt say why but he has his as he said it was they only non commercial vehicle that would hold his 5 kids and luggage but would cost about £170 to get to cornwall

I mentioned the Doblo - unfortunately, the word seems to be out as they are now getting expensive.

JTD models are turbo and better than the SX. You'll get around 50+ mpg, fold down seats allow for as many bikes as you can try to fit in the boot. 1.9 engine is a doddle to service, ours cost £129 locally for the cambelt.

£2500 will get you the ugliest car in town but cheap insurance, parts, economy and a car with mileage of around 60,000 to 100,000 depending on dealer.

Archaic leaf sprung rear suspension unlikely to seize like your 206! fairly quick with 109 bhp so you can overtake easily. DONT USE TESCO DIESEL!

The reason he says 1100 for head gasket is because 50 percent of them just need a gasket but 50 percent need a head. Saying that the heads are no dearer than most so he must be using a pretty expensive garage.

If it goes and is just the gasket then 1100 is way way off.
