Front Derailleur

Hi there,

I'd be grateful if anyone could please tell me what size band-on front derailleur I require for my 753 frame (SB7953). (I've become a bit paranoid about sizes, after my seatpost experiences).

Are there any lightweight front mechs thats anyone can recommend ? Will a modern mech such as the SRAM Rival or SRAM RED do the job ? (It would be for a double chainset).

I'd be using it with Simplex RetroFriction Shifters (non-indexed).

Thank you for any advice.

According to Tony Oliver's book, 753 are 28.6 OD.

Seat tube internal diameter is 27.5mm, so the very best standard of silver brazing will require a 27.4 seatpost, probably a 27.2 is more likely.

Personally for a light front mech I would go with Campagnolo.

Old DT shifters will drive virtually any front mech - you can pick up a near perfect Super Record front mech for £25 on ebay which would got far better with your old 753 than a modern one.

Thank you for the info.. I was considering a Suntour Superbe Pro front mech - would that be as good in your opinion ?

Superbe Pro were beautiful mechs. I always wanted some when I had Super Record and IIRC were even lighter than SR. The trouble is they would look out of place with a classic Super Record chainset. A more rounded streamlined look is required with the Suntour mechs.

Oops I sound like a right fussy old g*t. I'll stop now....
