can anybody tell me how to tell when the chain tension is right on a single speed bike. thanks.

Its right if the chain is not so loose that it keeps coming off or not so tight that there are stiff points when the crank is turned. Chain should move up or down a wee bit but no more than 1/2 inch

yep just spin crank backwards, IMO should be tight as possible so it does not bind. An uncentred chainring can sometimes mean chain tesnion is not consistent
