Hi, I need a new front mech. Will those described as 10 speed be okay on an 8 speed set up.? I assume the throw of the mech is still controlled by the gear lever (or STI/Ergo) as it used to. For the record, I have the first iteration of Ultegra STI from the early 90's. Am looking at a 10 speed Ultegra mech (double) or a Dura Ace one if I can be canny on ebay! just getting back on a road bike after a rather lengthy lay off and product knowledge is not up to the latest kit
Thanks in advance

In terms of mech throw and indexing etc you will be fine.
However, they are a little narrower and you will encounter more problems with it rubbing. As long as you have the better Shimano shifters with the trimming function you should be fine.

However, there are usually plenty of front mechs for sale as they don't get trashed like rears.

if you get one designated 9-10 speed, use a 9 speed chain to minimise the rubbing described by hamster. the chain will still work ok with your 8 spd set up

Otherwise I still have 8-speed Dura-ace and RX100 front mechs going spare.
