Is the use of nervex lugs an indicator of frame quality or were they used on gaspipe frames too?

As I'm a sucker for Nervex lugs I tend to take notice of such frames. But in all my years I've never come across one with Hi-Ten/carbon steel tube sets. They were very common amongst mid price bikes so my guess is that they were not the most expensive lug set but a sure sign of a quality frame. I have a '74 Crescent Reynolds 531 that is very stout and heavier than some so it's probably straight gauge. If you could weigh the frame and fork separately that would give you a good indication. The real artisans would often thin the lugs and do other alterations. So if the head tube lugs are very thin around the edges this would indicate a custom job.

There were many different types of Nervex lugs but the Nervex Professional lugset was used exlusively on high quality frames.

The cheaper Nervex Legere (of which there at least twenty styles) was generally used on mid-priced lightweight frames, never on 'gas pipe'.

For much more on Nervex, see this article: ... ervex.html
