Granted, with Shimano there would be a washing line on which you hang your sweaty vest to dry. But it violates Edwards' Law - Shimano on a Colnago is wrong

including pro teams, after all what do they know?

The alternative is and 'Edwards signature' build. Surely there is room for a M-Nine-Fiddy long cage on your new ride.

Was thinking RX100 or a Suntour Blaze to be honest as I have them spare and with the RX100 being low rent and in a mix'n'match build it is not inconsistent with Edwards' Law.

I think this post borders on trolling  You know a period alloy Campy gruppo is the wya forward. You just want someone to say

Hey Ed, why not go with an Edwards signature build

Well if it's justification you seek you have it from me. If you can find a long cage RX-100 get in there. If not might I suggest 200GS.

Fair enough, I probably asked for that. But trolling? Me? As if!

Ok, maybe I should provide a little more info on my dilemma and what I've got:

- Master X Light
- Saronni (badged as a Colnago), has mudguard eyes so intending to use it for winter duties
- Full Nuovo Record groupset
- Chorus 9 speed Ergos (but which ones :? ) with Racing Triple rear mech, front mech and chainset plus Campag 9 speed wheels

It makes sense to keep the 9 speed stuff together but I can't possibly put a triple on a the Master X Light (although I suppose I could remove the smaller ring but no, not a long cage rear mech on a Colnago). So that means the 9 speed stuff goes on the saronni.

Which leaves the X Light naked, as it were, but with a great condition Nuovo Record groupset plus Super Record and 7400 rear mechs, Superbe Pro calipers and Simplex downtube shifters if I want a real mash up. But Nuovo Record or the other stuff for that matter isn't period.

So really wondering what to do with the X Light. Dream scenario would be a C Record groupset (not period but I could, grudgingly, live with that) and I could always sell off the Nuovo Record to fund that (plus a bit extra added too I suspect). Patience is a virtue but I'd love to get the bad boy finished.

Amy further wise thoughts?

 just tellin' it like it is Ed.

FWIW (and I know you'll ignore me) this is what I'd do.

Nuovo Record -> Saroni / colnago. Surely foolish to ride a quality steel frame through a British winter whilst getting in the Belgian miles?

Buy a cheap winter hack with guards on. You could pick something up a few years old (but not retro or desireable) for peanuts. I have an old aluminium Specialized Allez with the worlds most knackered Ultegra groupset on for the winter. The guards barely fit and it is all looser than a 25 year old Ford Escort BUT it saves knackering the good stuff and if it does walk from outside the tea room I'd not be too gutted.

Get an alloy chorus / record gruppo for the Master. Save the triple in case you decide to do a sportive ;)

2002 Record was alloy except the ergos...

You really need my rear mech and chainset for this one Ed.... And I just sold the right front mech for it to someone else.

If it were mine (not that I would ever own a pink bike - I'm not THAT sure of my masculinity)

I'd be fitting
7700 Dura-ace full on. Wheels would be handbuilts on Open Pros with the groupset hubs.

Super Record on this would be a sin.

Put your bits and bobs on your winter bike. And put your campag 9-speed stuff on if you have nothing else.

Saddle - Assuming it's the pink-white-blue colour scheme - then I'd be going for blue saddle and bar tape and blue/black tyres if running silver bars, stem and seatpost. If running black seatpost etc, then I'd go for white saddle and bar tape and Black/white tyres.

Good stuff once again and being Libran I remain undecided. Plus I haven't even collected the Master X Light yet!

That said, thoughts are vaguely coalescing as follows:

- Saronni will be fine as a winter bike and in the real filth I'll ride on the fixed. Anyway, it owes me nothing, has more panache than a modern Trek, already has eyelets and has been sitting unloved in my mates shed for 18 months so any use at all will be happier for it. The 9 speed Campag stuff, including the Racing Triple, is going on it.

- the Master X Light is mainly white with light blue and pink highlights/detailing. Tape and saddle will be either white/white or black/black and saddle will be a black Flite or a Rolls/Turbo. Finishing kit will be silver and as plain as possible.

- the Master MUST have alloy components and I MUST be patient in finding them. I already have a couple of early 2000s Record chainsets (as you do) so it's really Ergos, rear mech and hubs/wheels that I need. There is no rush. Repeat to self, there is no rush.

Once I have the frames I'll post up again.

I also have some wheels I'd consider parting with Ed....

No rush....

Main problem will be the Record / Chorus rear Hubs they are going for silly money now on ebay. I managed to find a NOS pair of Daytona's for £100 from Total Cycles (i think) in Ireland, as I had a spare front 02 Record hub from my last build. Sold the redundant Daytona front hub for £35.00.

Last full 02 record hubs went for £235 on ebay

I think I have a Cycle Sport from 1993 with a feature on the Lampre team bike & kit, will scan it in but I cannot upload the image as the scan is too big as I know i coundt do it for a Mavic Zap article, can email it if you want

Cheers Tim

Maybe better hang onto my 3 pairs of Record hubs (96,98 and 2004) then....
