Pedals, clips and straps - which shoes to wear?

I'm refurbing a Harry Quinn, and I've fitted Super Record pedals, with Christophe straps and topclips. For the work ride, I use a Giant Bowery '84 with Wellgo pedals, toeclips and double-straps.

I'm wondering what shoes people wear for these - I've been using Converse Chuck Taylor, as they're light and thin enough to fit in the clips... but the grips on the Giant are piercing through the sole, and I need some new ones that might last longer... what do you lot use?

Traditional cycling shoes of course. Actually you may find old stock modern shoes that take bolt on cleats. I had some Specialized road shoes that used the rear 2 of a 3 bolt set up to use old style cleats. There are modern shoes that are very retro as well but the prices are not. Failing that look for a touring shoe as many can be used without any SPD or similar cleats having rubber soles. You really want something fairly smooth. Black of course.
