A good project, it looks like a smaller frame.

Here's a nice report of a restoration of an older frame: http://fixedgearwales.blogspot.com/2009 ... frame.html & http://fixedgearwales.blogspot.com/search?q=rust except he fixed geared it which I'm not into but I like the rest of the article though I'd be more for an authentic restoration, it may work just fine.

Ah, a Mercian King of Mercia.

Very high quality touring frame. Mercian still make these.

Nothing will be too good for it.

Thanks for the article, FemtoMetre. It's always an adventure! I'm not going to repaint this Mercian, as I like its antique appearance too much. It is a 55cm, which is 2-3cm too large for me, so I am building it as an upright bike.

chris667, it rides beautifully... like nothing else I've ever tried. (I had the chance to use it quite a bit when it still belonged to the previous owner. He had it set up as a single-speed beater/utility bike.)

I am stuck on the choice of headset.

Chromed steel. My '56 Mercian came with its original Brampton Alatet:

but a steel Nuovo Record would look the part if you can find one, and there's nothing wrong with a Tange Levin at an eighth of the price. A blue King would be a crime against taste in my view ... but it's your bike.

Remember also that people at the time it was new rode the biggest frame they could swing a leg over.
SO it's probably the right size for you. :D

I really can't see why you would want a blue headset in this bike  Or why anyone would ever want a blue headset on any bike for that matter.

some parts. NIB 2002-2006, when Campy still made Record triple and Record was available polished rather than black/carbon. (I may choose a different front derailleur without the black knuckle.) The QRs are not included in the photo... as they will not be used.
