The Norman Fay I keep carping on about cost me about £45 to put on the road - a couple of component changes and a couple of weeks training: I wouldnt think twice about attempting some of the big climbs...

Surely this is the ideal trip for the merckx?

School the other on the climbs with your legs and dt shifteers then rule the descents like Yates in his pomp.

As long as you have suitable gearing , any of your bike will be fine .

Reckon a custom 11-19 (5 speed screw on naturally) would give a bit more top end grunt.....

surely a 7 speed straight through 12-18?

Guess the merckx has 8 on the back so you should be able to get a sesnible block.

the hills in the alps are long and dont give much time to recover .
