My friend and her dad are doing a charity bike ride this weekend but the don't have bikes so i lent them my fire mountain and on one. Got chatting about old bikes and he took me in his garage (oo err) to show me a frame he's had hanging up for 15 years. It is a claud butler road bike with nice lugs but i have no idea of its age suitability or quality. He also gave me 2 sets of wheels. All this because i lent him my bikes. I.ll add pictures tomorrow

the lugs look pretty good and from my limited knowledge of road bikes i assume it is a sign of a reasonable frame.

i am not sure that the head badge is in line with the age of the frame though. theres every chance this has been pilled out of the skip at the falcon factory or put aside by an enployee as a lot of that used to happen!

one set of wheels has alivio hubs which has thrown me a little as i didnt know they were suitable for road bikes. the deep section rims look good but i suspect they are nothing special, given the hubs they are laced to.

the other set of wheels are better quality but nothing amazing - 105 hubs on wolber 0x1 rims.

i am thinking of building it up on the cheap as a single speed but have little idea of road parts ex bottom brackets and cranks.

the frame measures 55cm centre to centre, 56 centre to top and has a 56cm top tume. i am 5"10 with 29" inside leg. is this anywhere close for my?

cheers in advance, dave

thats fookin nice is that - fancey 'karma'iing to me in exchange for cash /bike/ cake shaped objects?

dont SS it...

please

badges put it around '94 ish onwards might be 853

There was a similar one on Ebay a while ago badged as a Colnago. He claimed it was Reynolds 853, if that is so then you have had a superb result with that, if its not then you've still had a superb result with that! :D

I'd say its the perfect size for you. SS would be okay you will need a single speed kit (to put a single cog on the freewheel) and a chain tensioner. All the other required parts are just standard road stuff. Don't spend a fortune on a single chainset though, get a double/ triple and just buy some single chainring bolts, works out loads less generally as the world has gone ss fixed gear mad!

single speed it and I will come and find you, point and laugh.

Sell it to me instead and I'll give you a frame you can SS to your hearts content.

when i first saw that pic i thought colnago aswel coz of the paint, reminds of the the casino team paintwork from a few years ago, i had my cougar painted in a similar style.

i assume that someone wouldn't rebadge a colnago as a claud butler though, but regardless i think that looks ike a nice frame and size wise does sound ok for you, i'm 5'9"ish and i ride a 54 so you should be fine.

:D

i only considered singlespeed as i'm not really into road bikes and it would be quick and easy. seems a crying shame for it to just be hung in another shed for 15 years.

however, i heard LGF is handy with a grinder so i better heed his warning.

Looks too nice for a Claud Butler :)

Is that a Cinelli BB shell?

I would guess Reynolds 653, maybe even a rebadged bike ridden by a sponsored rider?
