Old but with modern parts. Does it matter?

I haven't owned a road bike since I was 16 but have always wanted to ride off road, which I do with as much enthusiasm as ever. I've recently come across a classic English road bike that has been used up until recently. It has quite a mixture of parts some of which are probably 1990s, like the rear mech for instance.
To be worth much money would I need to rebuild with period parts? I'd be happy to ride it as is but don't want to get it if it is just going to be a money pit or unsaleable.

All old bikes are worth more when split for the bits. Adding modern stuff that's reversible is fine.
The only no-no things are to grind off original things like braze-ons or to repaint a frame with nice original patina.
Personally I ride a 1979 Witcomb 531 with original but scruffy paintwork but with a Campag Chorus drivetrain from 1999. I spread the rear to 130mm from 126mm to accommodate modern hubs, but kept the threaded headset, 5-arm crank and no carbon fibre is allowed near it!
