Greetings!

I am trying to date and identify my grandfather’s Claud Butler frame below. My grandmother thought it was from around the late 30s, which sounds about right given the frame number. Classique lugs, Continental ends. If anyone can provide any further information it would be greatly appreciated. The paint work is not original. I believe it was customer built to size from the London, Haringey store.

Frame no. 93539 E
ST C-C 22”
TT C-C 22”
DT C-C 23 1/2”
HT 6”
WB 41-41 1/2”

The Williams chain set dates from 1952, this could have been added later.

Thanks, Martyn

Hello Martyn,
Looks to me like you have a very nice March 1939 "Continental Classique"
Yes the Williams isn't original to the frameset, also the head badge and decals are all post 1958 Holdsworths, so not original either... what do you plan to do with it? Restoration or are you selling?

Thanks for the quick reply Peachy. I think it was a single speed. It might not have been bought as a full setup bicycle, just a bespoke frame with a self build as a lot of the components do not match.

Not for sale. Restoration.

Would this model have had a head badge (pre Olympic) or a transfer?

Frame set only sales weren't subject to VAT back then, so quite likely.

Excellent news on the restoration, if you want some help choosing the correct decals it would be my pleasure. :xmas-big-grin:

No headbadge, but I've seen plenty pre '48 Clauds around with them, you just need to repaint the rings in the 1948-1956 colour way.

Historical note.
Purchase tax started in 1940, VAT 1974.
I'm afraid I can remember both dates.
Typical club cyclists always bought components rather than complete bikes. Quite often complete bikes could be supplied for less than the retail price of components.
