Ok, so as I thought, 504 2366.... 50 (1950) 4 (April) 2366

The other number is likely a production number for the bought in BB shell.

If you want to know what bike it is.... you’ve guessed it.... more pictures

Send the photos to my email address. And can you confirm the number from the steering tube? A photo would be essential because somethings not quite right, no way there would have made 5149 in January (511 = 1951 January)

Ok, so the pictures clearly show 511 5149 on both BB & Steering tube. So this is another of our “odd” ones. It’s obviously not a simple case of January 1951 as the frame count of 5149 is too high, that’s the sort of figure normally seen at the end of the year.

It’s unlikely to be the pre-1950 system as that would make it 1945 (5) November (11) as this looks like a post 1949 model.

We’ve had the odd one before with a digit missing, normally from October (0), November (1) or December (2). That might fit, so 1951 (51) November (1)

Hopefully it will sit in with the list that dwscrimshaw has.

Thanks for that Peachy! Did they used to employ the tea boy or Guy the Gorilla to stamp the frame numbers . I bought it as an unfinished project ,I was initially drawn to the George Longstaff conversion set . But it is a lovely looking frame and after I finish tightening & truing up wheels, swooping handle bars ,gearing etc . I am going to use it as a barrow for the CTC British cycling Quest as a homage to its late owner . I hope in the summer to pop down to Bob Jacksons, and get a paint finish more appropriate to this quality of frame . Am I right in assuming that for extra cost at the time any paint finish was available from Claud Butler on this Model Frame . Thanks once again Colin

On an Avant Coureur Special you can have pretty much anything you want.. even crackle glaze!

Flipping Heck . What a choice , I have never even heard of crackled glaze . I will have to look at a few more pictures of Claud butlers from that era , some of them are really bold . A plum & cream avant coureur I have seen on the internet looks stunning .
This could be fun. thanks again colin

Greetings!

I am trying to date and identify my grandfather’s Claud Butler frame below. My grandmother thought it was from around the late 30s, which sounds about right given the frame number. Classique lugs, Continental ends. If anyone can provide any further information it would be greatly appreciated. The paint work is not original. I believe it was customer built to size from the London, Haringey store.

Frame no. 93539 E
ST C-C 22”
TT C-C 22”
DT C-C 23 1/2”
HT 6”
WB 41-41 1/2”

The Williams chain set dates from 1952, this could have been added later.

Thanks, Martyn
