...another bicycle. Am I mad?

This time it is something I have hankered after for a while. A veteran, proper old, classic bicycle.

It was sitting, unloved  , outside of an antique shop on my way back from University last week, so I had a quick look. It was still there yesterday, in the pouring rain  , so we had a chat, I made an offer, and bought it

I have been able to identify it, but I might need some help with things like advice on the original colour, and whether there is a register or owners group in the UK, dedicated to this marque.

I will start a build thread, though it will be a slow process, as I am still studying and don't have much time or money, and post better pics when it stops raining.

It does seem to be original, and all there. Always a good start.

Allow me to introduce to Retrobike, the 1926 Peugeot "Touriste Dame" (also designed for use by the clergy)

Re:

Oh man! That's some serious retrobike addiction you have there!
Fortunately you're not alone

I've been researching an 80's Peugeot and found the link below to be useful, all the Peugeot catalogues and brochures by country...

http://www.bikeboompeugeot.com/Brochure ... s%20UK.htm

And I joined the Facebook Group "Vintage Bicycles UK", lots of other cool vintage bikes and info on there... (there may be a vintage Peugeot bicycle group as well, I never looked!)....

If you've not looked into vintage (as opposed to "Retro") bikes before *Edit* I see you have already! ....I think you'll like it, it's like a whole other world! (and another way to bankrupt yourself if you're that way inclined  ).

Re:

Thanks, I know it's a different world, and it throws up different problems.

Today I found out that the front wheel needs truing. Don't know how this is going to go, as the spokes are soldered at their crossing point.

Also have to rebuild the head bearings. I just hope its only missing some balls.

Kind of looking forward to the challenges.

Dave

Re:

Nice interesting bike, its a slippery slope though with these vintage bicycles! I now have 5 pre-war bikes, where as just about 2 years ago I had none
I've also joined the Veteran Cycle club!

Here's my not quite latest aquistion, a 1938 Rudge Light Tourist

Re:

I've not been to any of their events, but the dealings I have had with some of their 'marque specialists' & library have all been helpful.
You do get about 10 magazines from them a year, which have got some good articles in & also small adds.
Personally I've found its worth the £25 membership for the mags.

I Must try out some of their events!

Re:

The tied and soldered spokes will probaly not be affected by truing the wheel. More of a problem might be turning the spoke nipples. I used to grip the spoke as close to the spoke key as possible. Back in the 50s/60s I built and repaired 1000s of wheels.

Well if you are in Bucks you could try the Reading Lightweight Ride tomorrow from Theale village hall. There is usually a good turnout of quality machines, and it's a great day out.

I have been having a closer look today Keith. I think I am past trimming the runout as there is significant rim damage.

Nice detailed Peugeot ID on the rim though. Looks like I am going to need new rims, 26 x 1 3/8, 36 hole.

There is also a problem with the headset, so it looks like I may need a replacement steerer tube, French threaded.....Bugger

Does anyone know of any specialist French restorers or bike dealers in the UK?
