Retro Newbie
HI First time poster so I hope i don't make any etiquette type blunders.

I am living in France and have decided to buy an old French bike kind of suits now that I am an old fart.
SO started hunting for a retro peugeot and found a couple local to me one a demi course type i think the other I am confused about i think its been very altered comes with a set of Mavic Ma 40 wheels, six speed with triple crank frame claims to be a super competition but has no Frame material stickers like 531 and the transfers don't really suit the frame age, it has cast drop outs but I am confused as to what it really is pics here

price 200 euro

Any one got any thoughts on these two as a first vintage buy?

Go for the cheaper one and just add a little oil and tlc. There are simply loads of old Peugeots still around and, in my opinion, unless it's a very special one, it's not worth spending €200 on one.

Re:

The second one looks like one of the fairly standard plain gauge Peugeots you see all over France (and here in
Belgium). Nice enough for the price but I don't personally find it very exciting. If you pass on that one there are certainly plenty of similar ones out there.

The second one looks more interesting. Is that maybe a Vitus decal on the downtube in front of the shifters? I think some French builders put those decals there rather than on the seat tube.
If you can find out the diameter of the seatpost, that gives you an idea of the tubeset.

Also, are those Simplex retrofriction shifters? Quite interesting and collectable on their own, those.

Overall, I quite like the second one and would try to get some more info, or maybe batter the seller down to
€150 :)

The second bike looks like an early 80s version of what Peugeot used to call a UE8. I had a mid-70’s one for a while. It’s very much a bottom of the range bike – heavy gaspipe tubing, cottered crank, etc. – but a very steady ride and good for pottering around. I enjoyed mine. One word of warning: those steel rims don’t like to stop in the rain.

The first bike is a real confusion. The over the BB cable guide suggestions somewhere around ’78-81 but the decals are late. Actually, on closer inspection the decals aren’t original at all: one side of the top tube says “Super Competition” and the other says “Coarse” and there’s a head badge decal above the shifters where the Reynolds/Vitus decal should be. The triple crank is a later addition as are the 2nd and 3rd bottle braze-ons. Still, whatever it is it looks like a pretty good mid-market frame and I would hazard that it’s at least 3 tubes 531 or Vitus 172. It must be of reasonable quality if someone has thought it worthy of adding the extra bottle braze-ons rather switch to a newer frame. :?

Like Johnsqual says you could always offer 150 and see what happens but bear in mind that should you wish to sell it on a future buyer might also have the same questions regarding its provenance.

shame how the 1st one is a mix of bits and dates , chrome looks in good shape

2nd one looks a lot more original and looks very nice

why not buy both ?

you can never have enough bikes
