Dawes Galaxy - original pannier rack - fit for purpose?

When I got my Galaxy very recently I was lucky enough to get it with the original pannier rack:

it just looks a little flimsy compared to modern racks but this is a respected tourer, after all this design made it through how many iterations of bike? It can't be useless?

Does anyone have any experience of using it?

I think they're strong but they wobble a lot. Modern ones are much stiffer and more stable.

I had a similar one on my CB Majestic and it held out fine during multi-day tours.

Just think of how many people used it back then and how many miles they have traveled loaded up kinda answers your question. Went to the shops the other day on mrs KB's Galaxy loaded up the panniers with the shopping and had no problems

Weak point is the attachment to the brake bolt, cracks through there. That's after loads of use though.

Sorry for the thread resurrection! But, Mr. Rhodes, do you have the size to hand of the seatpost? I have a similar vintage Galaxy and the post is the last piece of the puzzle!
