531 frame caliper options

Hi there,

I would like to ask you for some advice. I have a Renolds 531 frame Raleigh and I want to upgrade the brake calipers. I realise if I have the recessed type I will need to have the frame drilled, which I am happy do.

I would like to know how deep a drop I need for 700c wheels and which calipers you would recommend. I would like them silver and as effective as possible.

There is no standard drop - it depends on how the frame was built and how much space was left for mudguard clearance (if any).

I have recently fitted the Tektro R559s to a 1979 Witcomb which was designed for 27" with guards but now running 700c. The pad is in the middle to top of the slot. As the R559s have bolts there is no need to drill out the bosses.

Simplest is to fit some 700c wheels and measure the drop (centre of brake hole to centre of rim braking surface).

It's not always practical to drill the rear bridge to take a recessed bolt. If this is the case, you can use a front brake on the back held on with a regular bolt. Remember to switch the pads to the other side though.

All of the brakes you've listed below are good quality dual pivot, so the difference in performance isn't going to be huge and likely down to the compound of the pads.

If you need to do the two front brakes thing, Shimano calipers are often available individually and are good quality.

As hamster points out, measure the drop first.
