What bar tape was used on early 80s Peugeots?

I need to replace the tape on my 1982 Peugeot PKN10. When I first taped the bars I used white cotton as it's obviously retro, but I suspect manufacturers had moved on from cotton by then.

What would it have worn when the original owner wheeled it out of the shop? I'm presuming Benotto shiny tape was too posh for such mass produced bikes. My dad had some nasty plastic/vinyl stuff on his low end Raleigh that was constantly unravelling (I seem to recall it was kinda ridged).

Re:

I remember working on those bikes later in the decade and pulling that old tape off always resulted in a mist of yellowish dust wafting the direction of my beak!!

Re:

Velo Orange do some double thickness cotton tape. It looks completely original, wraps well and gives just a tiny bit more cushioning to your hands.
