Remember these?

I was looking for some info on Campagnolo rims and stumbled across these.

The rear 15kg STEEL disc acted like a flywheel and the front wheel created an air barrier for the riders legs - the axle is 320mm wide!!

Both banned by the UCI believe it or not. The lightweight nutters complain about the rules now, but back then it was just getting silly.

Somewhere I've seen a picture of a bike built up with these wheels as a time trial special but I don't think it was actually used in anger (UCI probably). I think it was a Pinarello or similar Italian make. It looks quite ugly.

If I find it I'll post a link.
