Hi,

I'm looking at a new project ... I have a frame in mind but I am not sure whether to buy it ...

WHat are your thoughts on this dent?

Re:

Assuming that the headset races remain parallel to each other and that the geometry of the frame is unaffected I cannot see that this should be much of a problem.

The question being, "should I buy it"' then absolutely not, looks like a full on front ender. Are the forks around?

There will always be another bike to buy that's not smashed up

If the question is is it safe to ride, then maybe, but try it gently

Re:

This is the font end ... does not look like it has had a crash ... more like something has banged against the head tube ...

Don't be soft. From just one closeup of a tiny dent there's nothing to point to any safety problems. Especially when it's in the middle of the only tube in an entire bike frame to have redundancy.

What needs checking is that the geometry of the frame and forks is correct, or at least manageable, and that there's no kinked/crushed metal anywhere that could crack.

We're talking about a steel bike, after all. Anyone who's scared of a tiny steel dent obviously never unfolded a paperclip or saw a spring move or anything in their life.

If it's just a dent then fine but boy would that annoy me! I'd have to get it filled and repainted.

It's only getting dented again next time you lean it on something and it falls over. not worth worrying about to be honest

The next project will be a repainted job; just looking for the right starting point ... can't help feel that knowing the dent is there will annoy me even if it is filled before painting.

The chrome is in excellent condition and the size spot on ... I will dwell on it.

With great access if the forks are removed, would a car dent specialist not be able to fix that?

Metal would be a bit thick for car bodywork type dent removal. Best filled with low temp braze :)
